I would like to share with you my view on Seniors Health in BC and the areas needing strong action in order to improve their well being.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on many people's mental health, especially our Seniors. The isolation, fear, and disruption caused by the pandemic have led to increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression among older adults.

Here are some key considerations regarding supporting and improving seniors' mental health post-pandemic:

--  Social Isolation: Seniors have been particularly vulnerable to social isolation during the pandemic due to lockdowns, restricted visitations, and reduced social interactions. This isolation can lead to feelings of loneliness, sadness, and increased risk of mental health issues. It is crucial to support seniors in rebuilding social connections and engaging in activities they enjoy.

--  Grief and Loss: Many seniors have experienced the loss of loved ones during the pandemic. The grief and bereavement process can be challenging, and seniors often need support to cope with their emotions effectively. Encouraging open communication, providing resources for grief counselling, and fostering a supportive environment can help seniors navigate this difficult period.

--  Anxiety and Fear: Seniors may continue to experience anxiety and fear related to their health and the ongoing uncertainties surrounding the pandemic. It is essential to provide accurate information, address their concerns, and encourage them to practice self-care and healthy coping strategies.

--  Access to Mental Health Services: Ensuring that seniors have access to mental health services is crucial. Healthcare providers should be vigilant in screening for mental health issues and providing appropriate interventions. Telehealth options can be particularly beneficial for seniors who may face challenges in accessing in-person care.

--  Physical Health and Well-being: Seniors' mental health is closely intertwined with their physical health. Encouraging regular exercise, healthy eating, and proper sleep can have positive effects on their overall well-being. Supportive programs that focus on physical activity and wellness can help seniors maintain a healthy lifestyle and improve their mental health.

--  Community Support: Engaging seniors in their communities and connecting them with support networks can significantly impact their mental health. Community centers, senior organizations, and local initiatives can provide valuable resources, social opportunities, and a sense of belonging.

--  Resilience and Coping Skills: Helping seniors develop resiliency and coping skills can enhance their ability to navigate post-pandemic challenges. Encouraging mindfulness practices, engaging in hobbies, promoting relaxation techniques, and providing educational resources can empower seniors to manage their stress levels  and maximize their overall mental wellness.

It is essential to remember that every individual's experience is unique, and some Seniors likely require specialized care or interventions. Once acknowledged, these key considerations,  in collaboration with the BC Seniors Advocate and BC Health Minister, will enable the creation of a viable plan of action, with BCNU taking on a significant role. By lobbying the Provincial Government and also involving BC Care Providers Association as a valued ally, we can ensure a better outcome for Seniors Health in BC.

And once elected in 2023, I pledge to do just that.
